5 Tips for Breast Cancer Prevention

Preventing breast cancer starts with daily healthy habits like physical activity and limiting your alcohol consumption. Having a family history of breast cancer won’t limit your risk but there are other lifestyle changes you can make for breast cancer prevention. We are going to share five tips for breast cancer prevention in this blog.

1. Limit Alcohol

The more alcohol you drink, the greater risk you are putting yourself at for breast cancer. It is recommended you limit yourself to one drink per day.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight

If you are at a healthy weight, it is important to maintain it. If you need to lose weight, speak to your doctor about recommended workouts. Slowly begin exercising and eating fewer calories.

3. Physical Activity

Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which will lower your risk of breast cancer. Most adults should aim for at least 150 minutes (about 2 and a half hours) a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week.

4. Breastfeed

Another way to prevent breast cancer is to breastfeed. Breastfeeding plays a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breastfeed, the greater the protective effect. Women who breastfeed their babies for at least a year in total have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

5. Be Vigilant About Breast Cancer Detection

If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as a new lump or skin changes, consult your doctor. Also, ask your doctor when to begin mammograms and other screenings based on your personal and family history.

We hope we were able to bring awareness to breast cancer for Breast Cancer Awareness Month during the whole month of October and give you some tips on how you can prevent breast cancer.
