Indoor Exercises to Stay Heart Healthy This Winter

As we approach the thick of the winter season, the excuse of “it’s too cold” begins to be used quite frequently when the topic of exercise is brought up. Continuing to stay active even through the winter is crucial for heart health, overall physical health and mental health. If you are struggling to stay active during the wintertime, continue reading this blog to find out a few different exercises you can do indoors to stay active.

1. Walking

  • Walking is a great form of exercise. There are a variety of options to still incorporate walking into your everyday life during the winter. Consider marching in place at home, going to a facility that has an indoor track, or even going for a walk around the local mall.

2. Yoga

  • Get moving this winter by incorporating yoga into your routine. Yoga is great exercise and a form of stretching to reduce stress, potentially lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and can help with an irregular heartbeat! Yoga can easily increase your flexibility and mindfulness while indoors by practicing different poses. You can register for a beginner's yoga class or there are many great videos for beginners online. Here is a video that demonstrates different yoga techniques for heart health.

3. Group Exercise Classes

  • It can be difficult to find the motivation to stay active, especially throughout the winter months. Participating in a group fitness class is a great option because the instructor can encourage you and guide you through the exercise.

4. Aerobics and Swimming

  • Consider trying swimming as a form of low-impact exercise. It is a really great way to stay active and can help with joint pain as well. Water aerobics can help with pain and stiffness while still allowing you to gain the benefits of cardio and resistance training.

Staying active throughout the winter months can be difficult but it is possible! It is extremely important to prioritize safety when participating in any form of exercise. You can gradually incorporate more activity into your routine but don’t try to add it all at once. Doing too much at one time can increase the risk of injury.  Try out these exercises to prioritize your heart health and increase your level of activity this winter!
